08-01-08 Bourdeaux, France

Bourdeaux, France. Home of Bourdeaux wines, arguably the most sought after soil and region for the Bourdeaux grape. Here, the wineries follow strict guidelines, which include zero irrigation. The local government has taken the opinion that if the region had been producing world renowned wines before irrigation, the region should continue to do so. Alotments are strictly maintained and wines from the "First Cru" are always hand picked. They also practice age old winemaking trades, such as planting roses at the heads of the vineyards to get a heads upon the encrotchment of diseases, using (new) oak barrels and aging before blending. At the behest of my dad, we took a wine tour, which turned out to be very informative as well as tasty! We walked through the wine process as well as having lunch at Cheatau Lynch Bages. A winery that was purchased by an Irishman from a Frenchman. Lunch of Cuisse de Canard (or more popularly known in the US as Duck Confitte) and then a bottle of the 2001 was served. If Lynch Bages is a 5th Cru than 1st Cru must be amazing. Actually, we had a 2nd Cru but it wasn't as good. I think it was a different vintage. Anyway, I used to think people who drank bourdeaux were snobs but the run of the mill $10 bourdeaux superior beats a $10 california cab anyday.
