07-11-08 Iraklio, Greece

Iraklio pretty much sucks. When we arrived, admidst all the confusion of disembarking from the ferry, some bushleague pick pocket goes for my wallet and goes so far as actually pulling out. Anyway, long story short we beat him into submission both physically and pychologically. Next, Iraklio has nothing really cultural to offer, save Knossos, which are ruins that were discovered, interpreted and preserved by Arthur Evans. While he dedicated his life to this endeavor (quite nobley) he took his own freedoms in interepretation of functions and look of the ruins. As such, each explanation is prefaced with "Arthur Evans interpreted..." and you're left feeling like this is some Las Vegas exhibit. Anyway, Iraklio is no good - skip it and go to the more beach-oriented portions of Crete.
