07-16-08 Cairo, Egypt

We chose to do a few auxillary tours while in Cairo other than the classic Great Pyramids. Of course, a day wouldn't be started right unless there was beer involved and thus, here I am with "Stella" Egyptian Beer. It tastes okay but it has a strange twinge to it as with any food coming from Egypt. I think it's the Nile river. In anycase, we pictured some "slices of life" within Cairo. Cairo is a hectic city with traffic worse than the LA 405 on a Friday afternoon. Not only are you fighting it out with other drivers, but with farmers on donkeys, kids playing in the streets and people walking in between lanes of traffic (speeding at 45mph+ mind you). Insane! Good thing we were part of a tour group and had a private driver. But of course, the car broke down and we were a public spectacle in the middle of a crowded street trying for about an hour to bring the subaru back to life. After no success, we hopped into a cab amidst 110 degree heat and were measured by the meter shown above. I swear there had to be some dude w/ one hand on an abacus and another on a lever. Anyway, we toured the main bazaar and ate some traditional Egyptian food. I almost bought a mother-of-pearl box, but stayed true to the no-souvenir policy as we don't have any room for it and shipping is far from economical.
